NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame men’s and women’s cross country teams are set to compete at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional meet on Saturday at the Katke-Cousins Golf Course in Rochester, Mich. The women’s six-kilometer race will begin at noon (EST), followed by the men’s ten-kilometer race at 1:15 p.m.
The Irish are ranked third among the 31-team field behind No. 1 Wisconsin and second-ranked Indiana.
During the 2009 season, the men finished ninth with 205 total points at the regional meet. Jake Walker (Ellwood City, Pa./Lincoln) was the top finisher for the Irish, clocking in at 31:21.10 to place ninth while earning all-region honors.
The women are ranked ninth among the 33 participating teams. Michigan State, Michigan and Toledo are the first, second and third ranked teams, respectively.
The women captured the crown at the 2009 Great Lakes Regional with 94 points. The Irish were led by Lindsey Ferguson (Greenfield Center, N.Y./Saratoga Springs), who went 20:58.62 for a third-place finish. Ferguson, Jessica Rydberg (Pinetop, Ariz./Blue Ridge) and Beth Tacl (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) earned all-region honors.
The top two teams of the regional will automatically qualify for the NCAA Championship, while at-large bids will also be awarded. The top-four individual finishers that did not qualify with their team will also be selected to compete at the NCAA Championship.
