The University of Notre Dame men’s tennis team got a chance to work on its doubles on Friday, and Irish competitors turned in some good results on the second day of action in the 16th annual Tom Fallon Invitational. Notre Dame players won seven of 11 matches on a day featuring only doubles action in the Eck Tennis Pavilion. The lone home tournament of the fall season for the Irish continues on Saturday at the Courtney Tennis Center with Notre Dame taking on Purdue and Indiana State at 9:00 a.m., Michigan at 1:00 p.m. and Harvard at 3:00 p.m. in singles before commencing with more doubles action at 4:30 p.m.
Leading the way for Notre Dame was senior Jake Cram (Littleton, Colo.), who was unbeaten in three matches with three different partners. Cram teamed with junior Ben Hatten (Potomac, Md.) to defeat Purdue’s Seth McKinley and David Robinson 8-6. Cram and freshman Patrick Buchanan (Fullerton, Calif.) then paired to defeat Haris Causevic and David Reichsfeld of Maryland 9-7. Sophomore Peter Graham (Luxembourg) became the third Irish player to team with Cram in triumph when the two defeated Ward Bertz and Scott Green of Wisconsin by an 8-3 score.
A pair of Irish juniors were 2-0 on Saturday. Hatten and Nicolas Lopez-Acevedo (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) played together in defeating Sounak Chatterjee and Seth McKinley of Purdue 9-8 (7-4). Earlier in the day, Hatten picked up a win with Cram, while Lopez-Acevedo teamed with freshman Eric Langenkamp (Scarsdale, N.Y.) for an 8-4 victory over Reichsfeld and Chris Chiu from Maryland.
Two other Irish doubles pairs picked up wins over Terrapin teams. Junior tri-captains Luis Haddock (Caguas, Puerto Rico) and Matthew Scott (Oakton, Va.) beat Causevic and Scott Peters 8-2, while sophomores Brent D’Amico (Castle Rock, Colo.) and Paul McNaughton (Hinsdale, Ill.) posted a 9-7 win over Troy Demers and Pierre Rudder.
Irish teams are 17-7 on the young season in doubles matches, while a number of individuals have had strong results. Cram is 6-1 this fall after heading into the season with just four career doubles wins in his previous three years. Haddock and Scott both boast 5-1 marks in doubles this fall, while Buchanan and Hatten are 2-0. Buchanan has a perfect 7-0 record thus far in collegiate tennis, also winning all five of his singles matches.
The Tom Fallon Invitational is a tournament featuring 11 teams competing in a “hidden dual” format, where teams simulate dual matches, but no team scores are recorded. Of this year’s field, seven teams finished in the national top 50 a year ago and eight of the 11 squads earned invitations to the 2002 NCAA Championship.
The event, which was known as the Irish Invitational until the name was changed in 1988, honors Notre Dame coaching legend Tom Fallon, who coached the Irish for 31 years from 1957-87. Fallon, a member of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Collegiate Tennis Hall of Fame, amassed a career record of 511-200 (.719) and helped Notre Dame to a share of the 1959 national championship.
