Irish Dominate To Claim Jackson T. Stephens Cup

The University of Notre Dame men’s golf team capped off its 2021-22 fall schedule with a brilliant performance at the inaugural Jackson T. Stephens Cup, named in memory of the late Augusta National Chairman. The event, set to be played each year to feature championship-contending men’s and women’s golf teams, was held at The Alotian Club in Roland, Arkansas, and was broadcast nationally on The Golf Channel.

Notre Dame, ranked No. 17 by Golfweek.com finished -8 as a team, a full 20 shots ahead of  No. 3/7 (Golfweek.com/Coaches Poll) Arkansas (+12) in second place. Individually, Palmer Jackson finished tied for first overall with Arkansas’ Mateo Fernandez De Oliveira by shooting a two-under par 70 in all three rounds. Jackson paced three Irish players who finished in the top five overall. Taichi Kho began with a 68 in the first round, then ended up at 211 (-5) to finish alone in third place. Right behind Kho was teammate Davis Chatfield (69-75-70, 214, -2) in fourth place.

The individual victory for Jackson ends a notable fall season for the junior from Murrysville, Pennsylvania. He finished no lower than 13th in all five fall tournaments and earned four of his seven career top-five finishes in the fall season’s five competitions. For Kho, the third-place finish is his highest since he earned second place at the 2019 Quail Valley Collegiate. Graduate student Chatfield carded the fourth top-five finish of his career.

After the 54 hole tournament was completed on Monday and Tuesday of this week, the teams took part in match play competition on Wednesday. Notre Dame’s effort from the first 54 holes carried over into the match play segments against Arkansas, as the Irish earned a 4-1 victory over the Razorbacks.

Kho earned a 1 Up victory, Chatfield went 6&4, Andrew O’Leary won his match 1 Up and Jackson carded a 2&1 victory.
