Notre Dame, Ind. – Freshman center Aaron Jamnick scored his first collegiate goal at 16:14 of the third period for what became the game-winning goal as the Providence College Friars handed Notre Dame a 3-2 loss in a rare Thursday night game at the Joyce Center.
Jamnick’s goal came just under seven minutes after Dan Kissel tied the game at 2-2 as he redirected a Kevin Deeth centering pass behind Providence goaltender Alex Beaudry for his first goal of the season. Senior left wing Ryan Thang scored Notre Dame’s first goal of the night. Defenseman Mark Fayne and right wing Matt Bergland also scored for the Friars.
The loss drops Notre Dame to 1-2-0 on the season while Providence is now 2-0 for the year. The two teams will meet on Friday night at the Joyce Center in a 7:35 p.m. game.
Beaudry, the Friars’ sophomore goaltender, was the story in the first period as he stopped 18-of-19 shots he faced to keep the score at 1-1. He finished the game with 33 saves in the victory.
Providence got on the scoreboard first at 2:59 of the first period when Fayne took a pass from freshman Chris Rooney at the top of the right wing circle and whipped a shot of Irish netminder Brad Phillips for his first goal of the season.
Notre Dame would knot the score at 1-1 at 16:07 of the first period with Thang scoring on the power play. Billy Maday moved the puck from the right boards to Riley Sheahan behind the net. The freshman tried to tuck the puck in the short side but Beaudry stopped it. The puck popped loose to Thang on the left doorstep and he popped it in over the Providence goaltender for his first goal of the season. The lamplighter was Notre Dame’s fourth power-play goal of the season.
In the second period, Providence’s defense tightened up, limiting the Irish to just seven shots while the Friars were peppering Phillips with 16 shots in the middle stanza.
They would score the only goal of the period when Jordan Kremyr broke up a Notre Dame scoring bid and fired the puck down the ice to a streaking Bergland who got behind the Irish defense and beat Phillips on a breakaway to give PC the 2-1 lead.
Notre Dame got the equalizer of the stick of Kissel on a pretty passing play. Kyle Palmieri moved the puck up the right boards through the neutral zone to Deeth who took the puck in stride, creating a two-on-one as he entered the Friars’ zone. His centering bid was deflected past Beaudry by a streaking Kissel at the left goal post to make it a 2-2 game at the 9:15 mark of the third period.
That goal came just moments after freshman forward Nick Larson was given a five-minute major for hitting from behind at 2:36 of the final period. Notre Dame’s penalty killers would hold Providence to just two shots on goal in the five-minute power play as the Irish killed the man-advantage, going four-for-four on the night.
The Friars would get the game winner at 16:14 of the third period as Providence got the puck deep behind the Irish goal where John Cavanagh took the puck away and found Jamnick in the high slot where he one-timed a shot past Phillips for the 3-2 advantage that Providence would hold on to for the win.
On the night, Notre Dame out shot Providence by a 33-29 margin. Phillips stopped 26 shots in his second start of the young season. The Irish power play was one-for-five in the game.

* The game was the fourth in the all-time series between Notre Dame and Providence College and marked the first time that the Friars had ever played in South Bend. The series is tied at 2-2.
* A crowd of 2,471 attended the rare Thursday night game that was set up by Notre Dame hosting USC in football on Saturday. The crowd snapped a streak of 11 straight sellouts for Notre Dame, dating back to Dec. 13, 2008.
* To date, the Irish have scored seven goals on the season. Four have come on the power play, one short-handed and two at even strength.
