NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame has earned the No. 2 seed for the 2013 NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championship and will play host to unseeded Detroit on Saturday in the tournament’s first round. The game is scheduled for 5 p.m. (ET) at Arlotta Stadium. The contest will be broadcast live on ESPNU and WatchESPN.com.

For ticket information, call the Notre Dame ticket office at 574-631-7356 or visit UND.com/tickets.

Notre Dame (10-4) gained an at-large berth from the BIG EAST Conference, while Detroit (5-9) won the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship to earn its first trip to the NCAA Championship. This will be the first-ever meeting between the Fighting Irish and Titans.

The Irish are making their program record eighth straight appearance in the NCAA Championship. Notre Dame owns an 11-17 record in 17 previous trips to the tournament. Last season, the Irish earned the tournament’s No. 4 seed and topped Yale, 13-7, in the first round and took down Virginia, 12-10, in the quarterfinals. Notre Dame fell to eventual national champion Loyola, 7-5, in the national semifinals.

The No. 2 seed is the best ever for Notre Dame. This is the sixth time overall – and fifth time in the last six seasons – the Fighting Irish have earned one of the eight national seeds for the NCAA Championship. The Irish also were seeded for the 2001 (5th), 2008 (6th), 2009 (7th), 2011 (4th) and 2012 (4th) tournaments.

The 16-team NCAA Championship field is comprised of eight automatic-qualifying teams and eight at-large squads. Only the top eight teams in the field are seeded. Syracuse is this year’s top seed.

Notre Dame faced six of the other seven seeded teams from the field. The Fighting Irish posted a 5-2 record against those squads this season.

The winner of the Notre Dame-Detroit contest will take on the winner of the first-round tilt between Duke and Loyola in the quarterfinals on May 19 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind. Duke is the tournament’s No. 7 seed, while Loyola is unseeded.

The tournament’s semifinals and finals will be held May 25 and 27 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pa. For more information on the 2013 NCAA Division I Men’s Lacrosse Championship, including a complete bracket, log onto ncaa.com
