Irish Earn Fourth Consecutive Win with Sweep Over BC

NOTRE DAME, Ind.  —  The University of Notre Dame volleyball team (7-9, 4-2) earned a sweeping, three-set victory (25-22, 25-15, 25-23) over Boston College (12-7, 2-4) on Sunday afternoon inside Purcell Pavilion. 

The Irish were propelled to their fourth consecutive win by a balanced attack. Notre Dame held Boston College to just a .139 attack percentage and 38 kills on the day.

Aubrey Hamilton led the Irish with nine kills on the day, while Lindsey Miller, Lauren Tarnoff, and Caroline Meuth each added eight. Zoe Nunez earned 36 assists on the day, while Miller’s four blocks led the team. Nancy Kane’s serving sparked the Irish in the third set with 11 attempts and a service ace.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Set

In the opening set, the Irish were propelled by a balanced attack, earning kills from five different players. 

Miller opened the offensive attack, perfectly placing a kill to give the Irish an early 8-6 advantage. With the match knotted at 17, Niego set up Lauren Tarnoff’s kill to put the Irish in front, 18-17. 

Nunez and Miller teamed up for the block to close out the set, giving the Irish the 25-22 victory. Hamilton and Tarnoff each tallied three kills in the set

The Irish forced nine Boston College errors in the set.

Second Set

After consistent back-and-forth early in the second, a block by Meuth and Tarnoff swung the momentum back in favor of the Irish, putting the Irish up, 12-10. A 4-0 Irish scoring run forced the Eagles to call time, but the Irish scoring attack quickly resumed, adding a fifth point before BC was able to get on the board with a kill.

The Irish would go on to dominate the rest of the set, before a BC attack error gave the Irish the strong second-set victory, 25-15.

Third Set

With the match knotted at six apiece, Miller and Niego partnered up for the block to put the Irish up, 7-6. The back-and-forth pace would continue, with both teams tied at 12.

Tarnoff, Miller, and Niego would register consecutive kills to build the Irish lead to 15-12, midway through the third set. Hamilton would add two more kills and Meuth would get in on the action to make it 19-15, Irish. 

Nancy Kane’s serving sparked the Irish with a dominant run. Her service ace gave the Irish the 20-15 advantage.

With the Irish up 23-18, the Eagles challenged a ball handling call and the reversal made it 22-19 Irish. Each team earned a service ace, bringing the score to 23-20. BC battled back within one before the Irish called timeout. 

Out of the timeout, BC’s service error made it match point and a Tarnoff and Meuth block gave the Irish the 25-22 victory and win.
