2022 ACC Men’s Golf Championship Results
The University of Notre Dame men’s golf team, bolstered by two individual top-10 finishes, posted a program-best fifth-place finish at the 2022 ACC Championship over the weekend. Junior Palmer Jackson recorded the program’s first top-five finish, shooting 68-69-68, 205 (-11), to earn a tie for third while graduate student Davis Chatfield joined him in the top 10 with a 71-71-68, 210 (-6) to finish in a tie for 10th.
The competition was held at Shark’s Tooth Golf Course in Panama City, Florida (par 72).
The ACC field was loaded this season with seven teams among the top 30 in the country. The 13th-ranked Irish went up against No. 7 North Carolina, No. 11 Georgia Tech, No. 15 Wake Forest, No. 23 Clemson, No. 24 Florida State and No. 26 NC State. The event is three rounds of stroke play followed by the top four teams determining the title through two days of match play.
The Irish were in contention for the fourth and final spot for the match play semifinals before Wake Forest posted birdies on the final two holes of stroke play to edge ahead of the Irish (-16) at -17. North Carolina (829, -35), Georgia Tech (838, -26), Florida State (845, -19) and Wake Forest all qualified for the semifinals.
Jackson continued his amazingly consistent play throughout the tournament and became the first Irish men’s golfer to post three straight days under 70 at a conference tournament. His 68-69-68, 205 score is the lowest for a Notre Dame participant at a conference tournament event, besting Davis Lamb’s 207 in the 2018 ACC event.
Chatfield stormed up the leaderboard in the third round of stroke play, jumping from 24th into a tie for 10th with his 68 in the third round. The Attleboro, Massachusetts, native is the first Irish golfer to record three top-30 finishes at the ACC Championship in a career (28th, 2017, t-12th, 2018, t-10th, 2022).
Sophomore Angelo Marcon competed in his first ACC title event for the Irish over the weekend and finished t-32d with a 71-72-74, 217 (+2).
The Irish will be among the teams who will hear their named called for the 2022 NCAA Regionals when the selections are announced on Wednesday, May 4th. The six regional sites are College Station, Texas, Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, New Haven, Connecticut, Stockton, California, Tuscaloosa, Alabama and Columbus, Ohio.
