Irish Fall to Florida State

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Notre Dame Fighting Irish (10-10, 4-8 ACC) fell to the Florida State Seminoles (16-8, 10-2 ACC) on Sunday, Oct. 29 in Purcell Pavilion. Phyona Schrader led the Irish with 10 kills and a .421 kill percentage, followed by Sydney Palazzolo with nine kills and eight digs.

Set One

While the Seminoles were able to claim an early 9-4 lead, a 4-0 run from the Irish brought it within one at 9-8. FSU responded with an 8-1 run of their own to extend their lead to 17-9. Trailing 22-13, the Irish offense was sparked by a Palazzolo kill as Notre Dame closed the gap to 23-18. The Seminoles, however, closed out the first with two kills to take set one 25-18.

Set Two

The Irish trailed early to start the second as the Seminoles carried their momentum from set one into set two with an 8-3 start. At the 18-11 mark, FSU would go on a 5-0 run to extend their lead to 23-11. A kill from Nicole Drewnick ignited the Notre Dame offense as they were able to close the gap, but their late efforts weren’t enough to overcome the deficit as the Irish fell 25-18 in set two.

Set Three

While the Seminoles had a 4-0 start in the third, the Irish came right back to take the lead 5-4. FSU responded with a 7-1 run as they led 11-6 with Notre Dame looking to close the gap. A kill from Ava Lange brought the Irish within four at 15-11, but the Seminole offense would lift FSU to a 20-12 advantage. The Irish weren’t going anywhere as they brought it within three at 21-18 and swapped points with the Seminoles up to the 24-22 mark. The Irish tried to hold on as they looked to take set three, but FSU would put away one last kill to win the final set 25-22.
