NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Marathon Basketball used a 19-0 first-half run and Notre Dame committed 26 turnovers as Marathon posted a 105-81 exhibition victory over the Irish in front of 7,790 fans Thursday night at the Joyce Center.
“It wasn’t a great effort out there and it probably was my fault,” says Notre Dame head coach. “I set the tone. We had more energy going into the first exhibition game (a win last Friday over the International Select All-Stars) than we did in this game. That comes from the top.
“I talked more about Ohio State (Notre Dame’s first round opponent in the Preseason NIT next Tuesday) than Marathon, so maybe the team was looking ahead and didn’t come out with the focus that we needed. We’ll try to correct our mistakes tomorrow.”
Former Dayton guard Darnell Hoskins had a game-high 39 points for Marathon on 15-of-27 shooting, including seven-of-eight three-point shooting, and 13 assists in 40 minutes. David Harrison and Mark Davis each added 19 points. William Trawick chipped in with 13 points and 14 rebounds.
Sophomore forward Troy Murphy led the Irish with 28 points and 15 rebounds. Sophomore forward David Graves scored 16 points and freshman guard Matt Carroll added 12. Sophomore center Harold Swanagan chipped in with 11 points and nine boards.
Notre Dame opens the regular season Tuesday, Nov. 16, as they travel to Columbus, Ohio, to take the No. 5-ranked Buckeyes in the Preseason NIT. The game will be televised nationally on espn2.
