Irish Fall To St. Mary's, 3-0

STANFORD, Calif. – Three St. Mary’s players posted double-digit kill totals Saturday at Maples Pavilion as the Gaels defeated the Notre Dame volleyball team, 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-23). Notre Dame fell to 3-2 on the season after dropping each of its two contests at the Stanford Invitational.

Sophomore Andrea McHugh led Notre Dame with seven kills and freshman Jeni Houser added six. Houser was named to the all-tournament team.

Notre Dame out-blocked St. Mary’s (3-3), 11-4, but St. Mary’s bounced 54 kills compared to 24 by the Irish.

The Irish hit .122 and St. Mary’s slugged at a .261 rate.

Lauren Corp had 18 kills on .395 hitting for St. Mary’s with Missy White dishing out 50 assists. The Gaels had five players with at least 10 digs as the team totaled 70.

St. Mary’s took the first three points of the first set with Notre Dame coming back to tie things at 12-12.

Corp’s kill one player later gave St. Mary’s the lead for good.

McHugh started the second with a blast but St. Mary’s came right back with a 3-0 run that would stretch the lead to as much as 12-7. Notre Dame tied it at 14-14 but the Irish would score just twice more before St. Mary’s hit the 25-point mark.

The third set tilted both ways with 20 ties and nine lead changes. The final stalemate came at 23-23 on a St. Mary’s error, but the Gaels got two straight points afterwards to steal the match.
