MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Notre Dame men’s tennis team showed strength up and down the line Saturday as play continued at the Gopher Invitational at the University of Minneapolis.
The Irish went 5-2 overall in doubles on the day and 11-9 in singles, including 11-5 in the event’s main Gold Flight.
All Irish participants won at least once in singles or doubles on the day. Sophomores Grayson Broadus and Nathan Griffin combined to defeat Drakes Calum MacGeogh and Ben Wood 6-0 in doubles, then each won their two singles matches. Broadus defeated MacGeogh 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, as well as Josh Pompan from Penn 1-6, 6-1, 6-3. Griffin defeated Wood 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 and Penn’s Thomas Spratt 7-6(2), 6-2.
Freshman Matt Gamble also picked up three victories, defeating Pompan and Spratt 7-5 in doubles with partner Alex Lebedev and upending Spratt 6-3, 7-6(4) and Wichita State’s Miroslav Herzan 1-6, 7-6(3), 7-6(6). Junior Brendon Kempin was similarly successful. He defeated Herzan and Haru Inoue 6-3 with sophomore Daniel Rayl in doubles and picked up wins over Herzan (2-6, 6-2, 6-2) and Boise State’s Harvey Shackleton (6-0, 6-4).
Play will resume Sunday at 9 a.m. ET Sunday, marking the final day of fall competition for the Irish.

Joanne Norell, athletics communications assistant director at the University of Notre Dame, has been part of the Fighting Irish athletics communications team since 2014 and coordinates communications efforts for the Notre Dame women’s soccer, men’s tennis, women’s tennis and fencing programs. Norell is a 2011 graduate of Purdue University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in mass communication, and earned her master’s degree in sports industry management from Georgetown University in 2013.
