Irish Head To Atlanta For Showdown With Georgia Tech

March 23, 2011

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The 19th-ranked University of Notre Dame women’s tennis team is set to resume its dual season after a four-day hiatus when it takes on 20th-ranked Georgia Tech at 3:00 p.m. (ET) on Thursday at the Bill Moore Tennis Center in Atlanta, Ga.

After not meeting each other at any point during Notre Dame’s first 30 years as a varsity program, the two teams will square off for the sixth time in the last five years. The Yellow Jackets lead the overall series by a 4-1 count, but the Irish enter this year with bragging rights after capturing last year’s matchup by a score of 4-3 at the Eck Tennis Center.

Kristy Frilling (Sidney, Ohio), who has improved to 13-0 at No. 1 singles on the dual season, leads the Irish as the third ranked singles player in the nation. She, along with teammate Shannon Mathews (Birmingham, Mich.), also enter the match as the 33rd ranked doubles duo in the nation.

The Irish bring with them a bit of momentum after ending their spring break trip to Tampa, Fla., with a much needed win over a top-20 foe. Notre Dame claimed a 5-2 over then 18th-ranked Tennessee, 5-2, to push its record to 9-7 on the dual campaign.

Georgia Tech, meanwhile, enters Thursday’s matchup with a record of 7-5 on the year. Most recently, the Yellow Jackets earned a 4-3 win over 14th ranked Vanderbilt. Three Georgia Tech players find themselves ranked in the singles polls, led by Jillian O’Neill, who checks in at 49th. Caroline Lilley and Sasha Krupina are the only doubles team in the polls, ranked 60th.
