NEW LONDON, N.C. — The University of Notre Dame men’s golf team was unable to prolong a fast start that saw three of its five starting players birdie the opening hole on Saturday during the second round of the ACC Championship at the Old North State Club. A round two score of 305 left the Irish in sole possession of 11th place following 36 holes with a team score of 608 (303-305).

Junior Cory Sciupider was one of the Notre Dame players who notched a birdie at the par-5 first hole to begin his round, and a lone bogey at the fifth hole sent the Etowah native out in even par 36. Three bogeys on the back nine dropped Sciupider into a tie for 37th place at 150 (75-75).

Sophomore Matthew Rushton worked his way back from a front nine score of 41 with a birdie at the par-4 10th hole, adding a second three at the 361-yard 12th to move to two-under-par on the back nine. An inward bogey at the par-5 18th hole knocked Rushton into a tie for 39th place after 36 holes at 151 (75-76).

Sophomore Blake Barens played his final 10 holes Saturday in a combined one-over-par, notching seven straight pars on the back nine to turn in a second round 76 (+4). Barens enters the final round in a tie for 46th place at 153 (77-76).
