WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Notre Dame men’s golf team posted matching scores of 303 and is currently in 16th place through two rounds of the Boilermaker Invitational which began Saturday in West Lafayette, Ind., at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex. The Irish stand at 30-over par 606 for the tournament, 44 strokes behind the leader and host school, Purdue. This weekend’s tourney is being contested on the par 72, 7,035-yard Kampen Course that also will play host to the NCAA Central Regional next month.
Sophomore Scott Gustafson (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie HS) leads the Notre Dame lineup with a two-round score of four-over par 148 (72-76), good for 37th place. The even-par 72 in the opening round was Gustafson’s best score of the spring and his eighth round at par or better this year. He will enter Sunday’s final round 10 strokes behind tournament leader Tom Johnson of Northwestern.
Freshman Cole Isban (South Bend, Ind./Mishawaka Marian HS) and sophomore Eric Deutsch (Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS) are tied for 62nd place with identical scores of eight-over par 152. Deutsch’s second-round 74 (+2) and 36-hole total are his best marks of the spring season.
Sophomore Mark Baldwin (Laconia, N.H./New Hampton Prep) is two strokes behind Isban and Deutsch at 10-over par 154 (78-76), which puts him in 71st place. Classmate Tommy Balderston (Boca Raton, Fla./St. Andrews HS) rounds out the Irish quintet in 86th place at 16-over par 160 (82-78) through two rounds.
Notre Dame will wrap up play at the Boilermaker Invitational Sunday beginning at 8 a.m. (EST) in West Lafayette. The Irish then will return home to prepare for the BIG EAST Championship, which will take place April 24-25 at the Warren Golf Course on the Notre Dame campus.
