STATESBORO, Ga. — The Notre Dame men’s golf team finds itself in 18th place after Friday’s first round of the Schenkel E-Z-Go Invitational at Forest Heights Country Club (par 72/6,947 yards) in Statesboro, Ga. The Irish shot a 23-over par 311 on Friday, with nationally-ranked Tennessee holding the first-round lead at one-under par 287. The Volunteers are one of a staggering 10 teams in this weekend’s field that are ranked in the top 50 of the current Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index.
Sophomore Jeff Chen (Walnut, Calif./Los Altos) and junior Doug Fortner (Tustin, Calif./Foothill) are tied for team-high scoring honors thus far, sharing 66th place after opening with matching scores of 77 (+5). Sophomore Connor Alan-Lee (Solana Beach, Calif./La Jolla Country Day School) is one shot back of his teammates in a tie for 78th place after firing a six-over par 78 on Friday, while another sophomore, Dustin Zhang (Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Carroll) is yet another stroke back in an 85th-place deadlock with a 79 (+7). Freshman Max Scodro (Chicago, Ill./Notre Dame Prep (Ariz.)) rounds out the Irish lineup in a tie for 94th place at 10-over par 82.
Notre Dame continues play at the Schenkel E-Z-Go Invitational with the second round of action on Saturday morning.
