Irish In Fourth Place Heading Into Final Round At The Tillinghast

Oct. 20, 2003

SCARSDALE, N.Y. – The Notre Dame men’s golf team received a boost from a different source during Monday’s first round at The Tillinghast, as the three players in the lower portion of the Irish lineup all finished within seven strokes of the lead. The end result was a team score of 300, putting Notre Dame nine shots back of tournament host St. John’s entering Tuesday’s second and final round at the par-70, 6,722-yard Fenway Country Club in Scarsdale, N.Y.

Competing in just his second tournament this fall, sophomore Mark Baldwin (Laconia, N.H./New Hampton Prep) led the Irish charge with a season-low round of 72, highlighted by a one-under par 34 for his opening nine holes. Freshman Shane Sigsbee (McKinney, Texas/McKinney HS) also carded his lowest round of the fall, registering a 73 that was punctuated by an even-par 35 on the final nine. In addition, a third Irish golfer attained his best round of the season, as sophomore Eric Deutsch (Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS) matched the 75 he had posted in the first round of his last two tournaments. Deutsch is competing as an individual at The Tillinghast and his score is not being counted toward Notre Dame’s team total.

Freshman Cole Isban (South Bend, Ind./Mishawaka Marian HS) also remains in the hunt, standing in 24th place after an opening-round 77, while sophomore Scott Gustafson (Rochester, Minn./Eden Prairie HS) is one shot behind his rookie teammate after an uncharacteristic first-round score of 78, his second-highest of the fall. Sophomore Tommy Balderston (Boca Raton, Fla./St. Andrews HS) completed the Irish lineup, logging an 83 on Monday to tie for 55th place.

The Tillinghast will conclude Tuesday with second-round action beginning at 8 a.m. (EDT). Final results from the tournament will be posted on the official Notre Dame athletics web site (www.und.com), as well as the Notre Dame Sports Hotline (574-631-3000).
