BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Notre Dame men’s golf team finds itself squarely in contention at the inaugural Shoal Creek Intercollegiate, firing a three-over par 291 to move into sixth place after Monday’s first round action at the Shoal Creek Golf Club (par 72/7,114 yards) in Birmingham, Ala. The Irish are seven shots off the opening-round lead held by LSU (284), with a quartet of nationally-ranked teams also standing between Notre Dame and the top spot — No. 12 Tennessee (285), No. 14 Georgia State (288), No. 17 Alabama (290) and No. 3 Florida (290). None of the 15 teams in the field were able to finish the second round, as early morning rains pushed back the first-round tee times and darkness set in before the second circuit could be completed.
Junior Cole Isban (South Bend, Ind./Mishawaka Marian) is one of four golfers tied for the lead after Monday’s opening round, carding a three-under par 69, one shot shy of his career-low round that he set at the 2004 Notre Dame Invitational/Central Regional Preview. Joining Isban atop the first-round leaderboard are a pair of LSU golfers — Chris Wells and Beck Troutman — as well as East Tennessee State’s Gareth Shaw.
Senior Mark Baldwin (Laconia, N.H./New Hampton Prep) registered a one-over par 73 on Monday and stands tied for 22nd place in the 75-man field. Classmates Eric Deutsch (Rochester, Minn./Lourdes) and Scott Gustafson (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) aren’t far behind Baldwin, with Deutsch shooting a two-over 74 and Gustafson firing a three-over 75. Deutsch is in a 31st-place tie, thanks to a sharp second nine that saw him come home at one-under 35. Meanwhile, Gustafson is tied for 41st place after going out in two-under 34 before a tough second nine set him back somewhat. Sophomore Greg Rodgers (Phoenix, Md./St. Paul’s School) rounded out the Notre Dame quintet, tying for 50th place thus far with a four-over par 76.
Teams are scheduled to return to the course Tuesday at 8:15 a.m. (CT) to complete second-round play at the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate, hosted by UAB. They will then turn around and begin the final round immediately thereafter, with pairings determined by team standings through two rounds. A complete recap and final statistics will be available upon conclusion of the day’s events on the official Irish athletics web site (www.und.com).
