The 23rd-ranked Irish men’s cross country team finished in fifth place, while the women placed sixth at the BIG EAST Conference Championships held on Saturday at Jamesville Beach Park in Jamesville, N.Y.
Senior Dan Jackson (Ann Arbor, Mich./Dexter) earned the first All-BIG EAST honor of his career with a 12th place finish for the men’s team, clocking in at 25:32. Freshman Martin Grady (Burr Ridge, Ill./Fenwick) placed 20th in 25:59, while sophomore Jeremy Rae (Fort Erie, Ont./Lakeshore Catholic) and junior Johnathan Shawel (Placentia, Calif./Troy) finished back-to-back at 26:09 and 26:10 respectively, good for 26th and 27th place. Junior Jordan Carlson (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Rosemount) was 44th with a time of 26:34, while senior Mat Abernethy (College Park, Md./Georgetown Prep) clocked in at 26:54, good for 53rd place. Junior Kelly Lynch (Spokane, Wash./Mead) ran the course in 27:24 to finish 64th, followed by junior Joseph Miller (Bowling Green, Ohio/St. John’s Jesuit), who clocked in at 27:25 to place 65th. Senior Ryan Gamboa (Upland, Calif./Upland) rounded out the Irish runners, placing 69th with a time of 27:30.
Host Syracuse won the men’s team crown with 59 points. Louisville finished second with 63 points and Providence was third with 84. Villanova was fourth with 85 points and Notre Dame rounded out the top five with 127 total points.
Providence’s Lee Carey won the men’s individual title with a time of 24:56.
Freshman Meg Ryan (Fairfield, Ct./Fairfield Warde) was the top finisher for the Irish women’s team, crossing the line in 22:05 to finish 30th. Senior Erica Watson (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) was 33rd with a time of 22:11, sophomore Rebecca Tracy (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) finished 38th in 22:34 and junior Rachel Velarde (Albuquerque, N.M./Eldorado) placed 42nd in 22:38. Freshman Kelly Curran (Bloomington, Ill./Bloomington Central Catholic) was 47th at 22:45 and freshman Alexa Aragon (Billings, Mont./Billings Senior) was 55th at 22:59, followed by junior Molly Hirt (Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington North) in 63rd (23:12) and senior Theresa Cattuna in 64th (23:18). Junior Susanna Sullivan (Falls Church, Va./George Mason) clocked in at 24:19 to finish 94th, rounding out the Irish runners.
The Villanova women won the team crown with 26 total points. Georgetown finished second with 42 points, followed by Syracuse in third with 79. Providence finished fourth with 90 points, West Virginia earned 149 points for fifth place and Notre Dame was sixth with 183 points.
Villanova’s Sheila Reid won the women’s individual title for the second-straight year with a time of 20:31.
The Irish will have two weeks of f to prepare for the NCAA Great Lakes Regional meet on Nov. 13 in Rochester, Mich.
