MADISON, Wis. — The University of Notre Dame men’s cross country team assured itself a spot at the NCAA Championships on Friday, finishing second at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional at the Zimmer Championship Course at Wisconsin.
The 19th-ranked Irish placed four in the top-25 to earn All-Region recognition, while all seven Irish runners finished in the top 30. No. 17 Purdue claimed the regional title, and the top four teams were separated by just eight points as the race remained tightly packed through eight kilometers.
Sophomore Dylan Jacobs led the way for the Irish, placing eighth in his first collegiate cross country 10K with a time of 30:20.5. Junior Yared Nuguse finished 10th in 30:28.9, followed by Andrew Alexander (15th, 30:44.1), Kevin Salvano (25th, 30:55.7) and Matthew Carmody (30:59.4) to round out Notre Dame’s scorers.
“We ran a great team race today and had all seven of our guys show up,” head men’s cross country coach Sean Carlson said. “This is great momentum going into the national meet and our boys are ready at the perfect time of the year.”
The Irish women placed fifth with 144 points and will find out whether they’ll qualify with an at-large NCAA bid during the NCAA Selection Show at 5 p.m. ET Saturday on NCAA.com.
Michigan State won the women’s region with 49 points in the 6K race, followed by Michigan with 74, both earning automatic NCAA Championship bids. Wisconsin (100) and Ohio State (134) finished third and fourth, respectively, ahead of the Irish.
Graduate student Anna Rohrer led the Irish women with a fifth-place finish with a time of 20:11.4. She was joined on the All-Region team by sophomore Jackie Gaughan, who finished 16th in 20:49.5. Maddy Denner (38th), Jocelyn Long (42nd) and Erin Archibeck (43rd) rounded out the Irish top five.
