EAST LANSING, Mich. – The University of Notre Dame men’s tennis team picked up two wins on the opening day of the ITA Midwest Championships at Michigan State University. Sophomore Eric Langenkamp (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale H.S.), the second seed in the qualifying round, dominated Cleveland State’s Jay Tee in a 6-0, 6-1 victory. Sophomore Patrick Buchanan (Fullerton, Calif./Servite H.S.) topped Iowa’s Jonny Hoak 6-0, 7-5.
Langenkamp is now 7-1 and will face Nick Kooyers of Valporaiso in the qualifying round of 32. Buchanan improves to 5-2 and will take on Todd Wojtkowski of Toledo in the round of 32.
Play in the qualifying round will continue tomorrow, with the top eight players advancing to the main draw in singles. Play in the main draw for both singles and doubles will begin on Saturday.
