LA JOLLA, Calif. – The men’s tennis team advanced three teams to the round of 32 at the Pacific Coast Doubles Championships at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club in La Jolla on Friday, but none of the teams could push into the main draw’s round of 16.
David Anderson (Sandwich, Mass./Sandwich) and Sean Tan (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood) began play on Friday morning with a 7-6 (4), 6-3 win over Ryan Cheung and Zachary Leslie to advance to the round of 64. In the round of 64, Tan and Anderson downed John Drosick and Alex Lesser, 6-0, 6-1. In the round of 32, the Irish tandem ran up against John Kelly and Jeff Tarango. Kelly and Tarango went on to record a three-set win over Anderson and Tan, 3-6, 7-5, 6-0.
Tyler Davis (Nashville, Tenn./Father Ryan) and freshman Samuel Keeton (Kansas City, Mo./The Pembroke Hill School) began their day of play in the round of 64 where they were matched up against Daniel Gliner and Andrew Kells of USC. Davis and Keeton advanced, 6-3, 6-4. In the round of 32, they took on Arthur Hernandez and Brian Morton. Morton and Hernandez proved victorious, 6-2, 6-4.
Niall Fitzgerald (Wicklow, Ireland/Blackrock College) and Matt Johnson (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) also began play in the round of 64, in which they knocked-off Gannon Nicoll and John Chanfreau in a tightly contested match, 7-5, 6-7, 7-6. In the round of 32, Fitzgerald and Johnson found themselves pitted against Mateusz Kecki and Jaak Poldma, who knocked-off the Irish duo, 6-2, 7-5.
Rounding out the Irish contingent, Casey Watt (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine Richland) and Santiago Montoya (Austin, Texas/St. Stephen’s) fell in their first match to Blake Meister and Eric Rubens, 6-4, 6-3. Since they lost their first match, they will be placed in the consolation draw.
The semifinals of the tournament are slated to take place at 10:00 a.m. (PST) on Sunday morning, while the Championship will be contested at 1:00 p.m. (PST). All teams losing their first match will automatically be entered into the consolation draw. The consolation finals are slated for noon start on Sunday.
