NEW YORK – For the fourth time in eight seasons, the Irish men’s track and field team brought home top honors at the BIG EAST Indoor Championships. This marks the eighth consecutive season that the Irish have won either the indoor or outdoor conference titles.
Five individual titles and 15 all-BIG EAST honors led the Irish to the conference crown. Johnathan Shawel took home top honors in the men’s 1,000 meters, Jack Howard won the men’s 800-meter title, Eric Quick claimed the men’s triple jump championship and Justin Schneider earned the top spot in the men’s heptathlon. Kevin Schipper also took home the top prize in the men’s pole vault on Saturday. For his winning efforts, Quick was named the men’s field performer of the meet. The Irish coaches also were named the Men’s Indoor Coaching Staff of the Year.
The Irish men scored 146.50 total points, cruising past second-place Georgetown with 104. Louisville (93 points), Villanova (76.50) and Connecticut (75.50) rounded out the top five.
The Irish women finished sixth as Joanna Schultz won the women’s 400 meter title and four student-athletes earned all-conference accolades.
Villanova earned the women’s title with 115 total points, followed by Louisville in second with 107 and Connecticut in third with 84. The Irish earned 58.50 points.
Women’s 60m Hurdles: Kali Watkins clocked in at 8.73 to finish eighth in the final heat. West Virginia’s Chelsea Carrier was the top hurdler with a time of 8.31.
Women’s 400m: Joanna Schultz added another BIG EAST title with a first-place time of 53.16. Georgetown’s Abigail Johnson finished second at 53.64 and Villanova’s Christie Verdier was third in 54.21.
Men’s 500: Jack Howard finished seventh with a time of 1:04.37. Rutgers’ Aaron Younger was the top runner with a time of 1:01.44.
Women’s 800m: Kelly Langhans earned all-BIG EAST honors with a third-place time of 2:10.40. DePaul’s Mary Cate Quiett earned the top spot with a time of 2:08.91.
Men’s 800m: Jack Howard garnered his first BIG EAST title with a first-place time of 1:51.24, edging Villanova’s Cody Harper who finished second at 1:52.14. Jim Notwell scored points for the Irish, clocking in at 1:53.48 to finish sixth.
Women’s Mile: Marissa Treece clocked in at 4:53.91 to finish third and earn all-conference honors, just ahead of point-scoring Rebecca Tracy who finished fifth in 4:55.97. Villanova Wildcats earned the top two positions.
Men’s Mile: Jordan Carlson and Daniel Clark earned all-conference nods after finishing second and third, respectively. Carlson clocked in at 4:10.12, just ahead of Clark at 4:10.71. Jeremy Rae also scored points for the Irish with a seventh-place time of 4:12.98.
Women’s 1000m: Abby Higgins finished sixth with a time of 2:50.23. Villanova’s Sheila Reid was the top runner with a time of 2:45.02.
Men’s 1000m: Irish runners led the way with Johnathan Shawel claiming his first BIG EAST title with a time of 2:24.69. Blake Choplin finished second in 2:25.19. Kevin Labus scored points for Notre Dame with a sixth-place time of 2:27.76.
Women’s 3000m: Lindsey Ferguson scored points for the Irish with a seventh-place time of 9:36.14. Beth Tacl finished 11th in 9:42.71. Villanova’s Alison Smith was the top runner with a time of 9:16.62.
Men’s 3000m: Jake Walker added points to the Irish total with an eighth-place finish and a time of 8:15.01, just ahead of Dan Jackson in ninth at 8:18.59. Joe Miller finished 11th in 8:19.56 and Jordan Carlson clocked in at 8:31.44 to finish 16th.
Women’s 4x800m Relay: The Irish finished fifth with a time of 8:51.73. Villanova was the top team with a time of 8:39.34.
Men’s 4x800m Relay: The Irish team earned all-BIG EAST honors with a second-place finish and a time of 7:31.22, just behind Villanova in first at 7:31.00. Connecticut finished third at 7:32.71.
Men’s 4x400m Relay: The Irish finished sixth with a time of 3:15.64. Seton Hall was the top team, clocking in at 3:11.35.
Women’s Shot Put: Jaclyn Espinoza scored points for the Irish with a sixth-place mark of 14.65m (48-00 3/4), while Rudy Atang finished ninth at 14.19m (46-06 3/4). Louisville’s Jere’ Summers won the event with a toss of 16.93m (55-06 1/2).
Men’s Shot Put: Denes Veres earned all-conference honors with a second-place toss of 17.02m (55-10 1/4). John Belcher finished sixth at 16.57m (54-04 1/2) and Andrew Hills was seventh at 16.38m (53-09).
Women’s Triple Jump: Jasmine Williams finished seventh with a jump of 11.58m (38-00). Louisville’s Rachel Gehret was the top jumper with a mark of 12.36m (46-06 3/4).
Men’s Triple Jump: Eric Quick won his first BIG EAST title with a first-place jump of 15.46m (50-08 3/4), topping Pittsburgh’s Folarin Ijelu in second at 15.28m (50-01 1/4).
Men’s High Jump: Doug Onuscheck finished 10th with a mark of 2.01m (6-07).Rutgers’ Adam Bergo was the top jumper with a height of 2.14m (7-00 1/4).
Men’s Heptathlon: Justin Schneider earned his first BIG EAST individual title with 5,339 total points, topping Connecticut’s Jacob Waruch in second at 5,094. Ted Glasnow finished sixth with 4,776 points and Dean Odegard was ninth at 4,390.
