COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Notre Dame men’s tennis team is one step closer to capturing the titles at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships, hosted by Ohio State University at the Varsity Tennis Center and Racquet Club of Columbus.
The Irish followed up their strong first round of the singles main draw with an even more declarative second round. All five of the Notre Dame players in the round of 32 won their matches. Freshman Josh Hagar defeated the 13th seed, Satral of Wisconsin, 6-2, 6-2. Sophomore Quentin Monaghan took down Kokorev of Wisconsin, 6-4, 6-3. Sophomore Kenneth Sabacinski defeated sixth-seeded Stefan of Michigan, 6-3, 6-1. Senior Ryan Bandy beat 14th seed Guignon of Illinois, 6-2, 6-3. And finally, second seed senior Greg Andrews beat Zieba of Northwestern, 6-3, 7-5.
The quarterfinals saw four losses for the Irish, however. Hagar fell to No. 1 seed Kobelt of Ohio State, 6-1, 6-4; Monaghan lost to the tenth seed, Illinois’ Gosea, 6-4, 6-1; and Sabacinski dropped to ninth-seeded Callahan of Ohio State, 6-1, 6-4.
Andrews and Bandy were forced to play one another, with Andrews coming out on top after three seats (6-3, 2-6, 6-3). Andrews will play in the semifinals tomorrow, facing Indre of Western Michigan.
The Irish have also seen much success in the doubles bracket this weekend, with two teams in the final eight. After a first round buy, sophomore Alex Lawson and and Andrews beat Tenzer and Scott of WGB, 8-7. They then handily took down Kircheimer and Zanotti of Northwestern, 8-1. Hagar and Monaghan beat Tebon and Leto of WGB (8-4) and then took down Indre and Cahn of Western Michigan, 8-1. To advance to the quarterfinals, they took down sixth-seeded Bernstein and Buzzi of Michigan, 8-4.
Junior Wyatt McCoy and sophomore Nicolas Montoya beat Oliveira and Appanervanda of Illinois State (8-4) before falling to first-seeded Kopinski and Guignon of Illinois, 8-4. Junior Dougie Barnard and Senior Michael Fredericka beat Kang and Cobos of IPFW (8-4) before losing to Illinois’ Jesse and Gosea, 8-1. Freshman Eddy Covalschi and Sabacinski handily beat Raa and Wangsten Oye of IPFW (8-2) before dropping to Stefan and Wong of Michigan, 8-4. Schnurrenberger and senior Matt Dooley fell in the first round to Horoz and Zieba of Northwestern, 8-6.
