Irish Open Weekend With 13-9 Win Over Northwestern

April 26, 2003

Notre Dame, Ind. – The Notre Dame women’s lacrosse team picked up its second consecutive home win on Saturday afternoon with a 13-9 victory over Northwestern at Moose Krause Stadium.

With the win, the 18th-ranked Irish improve to 6-7 on the season while the loss drops Northwestern to 7-7 on the year. The Irish close the regular-season home schedule on Sunday afternoon with a BIG EAST contest versus the Rutgers Scarlet Knights.

For the third game in a row, the Irish were led offensively by freshman Crysti Foote (Suffern, N.Y.) who turned in a five-point game with three goals and two assists. In her last three games, the freshman attack standout has recorded 17 points on 10 goals and seven assists.

Joining Foote with multiple-goal games for the Irish were Meredith Simon (Jr., Flemington, N.J.), Anne Riley (Sr., Marblehead, Mass.) and freshman Mary McGrath (Bryn Mawr, Pa.), who each scored twice in the game. Northwestern was led offensively by junior Angela McMahon, who scored three goals in the final minute of the game, and sophomore Erin Flynn, who scored twice.

Notre Dame jumped out to a 3-0 lead in a low-scoring first half. Simon opened the scoring with a free-position goal at 23:09. Abby Owen (Jr., Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) made it 2-0 off a feed from Foote and Foote got her first goal of the game at 18:19 for the three-goal lead.

Northwestern broke through to cut the lead to 3-2 on goals by Flynn and Donna McMann. Mary McGrath gave the Irish a 4-2 lead with her first goal of the day with 2:27 left in the half only to see Courtney Koester score with 1:01 left for the final goal of the half and a 4-3 Irish lead.

The Irish were able to get their offense untracked in the second half scoring nine times. Simon got her second of the game just 17 seconds into the second half and Riley got both of her goals off Danielle Shearer (Sr., Hampstead, Md.) setups to make it 7-3 with 5:54 gone in the second half. Northwestern held Shearer without a goal in the game making the Wildcats the only team to stop Notre Dame’s top scorer this season.

Flynn got her second goal of the game at 23:13 and was quickly followed by Foote and McGrath with their second goals of the game to build the lead to 9-4.

The teams traded three free-position goals over the next three minutes as Lindsay Munday and Laura Glassanos sandwiched goals around one by Foote, her third goal of the game.

Glassanos’ goal made it 10-6 before the Irish put the game away with the next three goals as Kassen Delano (Jr., Alexandria, Va.), Eleanor Weille (Sr., Garden City, N.Y.) and Lauren Fischer (Jr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) each scored to give the Notre Dame a 13-6 lead until the final 34 seconds.

McMahon closed out the scoring for the Wildcats as she scored three times in the final 34 seconds for the final score of 13-9.

Notre Dame outshot Northwestern on the afternoon by a 29-20 margin. Jen White (Sr., Annapolis, Md.) made eight saves for the Irish while sophomore Ashley Gersuk made 10 stops in goal for the Wildcats.
