COLUMBUS, Ohio — Four University of Notre Dame men’s tennis student-athletes remain in contention as play narrows to the quarterfinal round in both singles and doubles at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships at the Varsity Tennis Center at Ohio State.
Sophomore Alex Lebedev will play in the singles quarterfinal Sunday after winning in the rounds of 32 and 16 Saturday. Lebedev and freshman partner Matt Gamble are also into the doubles quarterfinal, while top-seeded senior duo Josh Hagar and Eddy Covalschi also remain in play.
Lebedev, the 18th-seed of the bracket, defeated Northwestern’s 13th-seeded Dominik Stary 7-6, 6-4 in the Round of 32, then Valparaiso’s Charlie Emhardt, 6-1, 6-4. He will play Michigan’s 19th-seeded Myles Schalet on Sunday.
Fourth-seeded Hagar also won his Round of 32 singles match, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 over Marquette’s Alvaro Verdu before falling to Michigan’s No. 14 seed Kevin Wong 7-6, 6-1 in the Round of 16.
In doubles, Hagar and Covalschi upended Detroit’s Artem Vasheshnikov and Ismail Kadyrov, 8-3, as well as the 10th-seeded duo from Illinois, Julian Childers and Alex Jesse, 8-4. They will face Valpo’s Kyle Dunn and Garrett Gardner on Sunday.
Lebedev and Gamble, who are seeded 11th in the doubles draw, defeated Michael Lorenzini and Chris Ephron of Northwestern, 8-4, before defeating third-seeded Hunter Tubert and Martin Joyce of Ohio State, 8-6. They will take on Valparaiso duo Chad Kissell and Dave Bacalla on Sunday.
