NOTRE DAME, Ind. — Three members of the University of Notre Dame softball team were recognized for outstanding achievement in the classroom during the 2015 softball season by being named to the all-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Academic Softball Team on Tuesday. Graduated senior Katey Haus and then sophomores Rachel Nasland and Kimmy Sullivan claimed all-ACC academic accolades, running Notre Dame’s total to six all-ACC academic team performers in two seasons as a conference member.
To be eligible for consideration for the all-ACC academic team, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during her academic career. The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, presented on Tuesday to North Carolina State senior pitcher Emily Weiman, was established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete of a member institution who has maintained a 3.00 grade point average for their career as well as a 3.00 for each of the last two semesters.
Haus was named to the all-ACC Academic Softball Team for the second consecutive season, becoming the first multi-time Notre Dame honoree to receive the award, following a masterful senior campaign on the diamond. She batted a career-high .409 with 15 doubles, 11 home runs, 59 RBI, a .693 slugging percentage, a .485 on-base percentage and 45 runs scored in 57 starts in 2015, earning a National Fastpitch Coaches (NFCA) Mid-Atlantic all-region first team citation. Haus ranked first on the Irish roster with 17 multi-RBI games and was second with 24 multi-hit outings. She was also named all-conference for the first time by earning a nod to the all-ACC first team after batting .371 with five home runs and 24 RBI in 23 ACC starts.
Nasland enjoyed a breakout season in the pitching circle for Notre Dame, logging a 17-9 record and a 2.83 ERA in 36 appearances (29 starts) in 2015. She was a four-time ACC Pitcher of the Week (Feb. 24, March 16, March 23, March 30) selection, which tied for the conference lead among all pitchers, before ultimately copping an all-ACC second team scroll. Nasland limited opposing batters to a final .207 batting average against over 180.2 innings, yielded 67 walks and struck out 170 opposing batters. The Irish sophomore compiled an 8-4 mark with a 3.33 ERA in 14 ACC appearances, throwing her first collegiate no-hitter at No. 9 Florida State on March 15. Nasland was previously tabbed to the 2014 ACC Academic Honor Roll at the conclusion of her freshman season.
Sullivan made a career-high 29 appearances in the Notre Dame lineup during her sophomore campaign, earning five starts in 2015. She batted .250 with one home run, six RBI, one stolen base and a career-high nine runs scored. Sullivan was a standout as a pinch hitter, going a cumulative 5-for-13 (.385) in that role, and drove in five of her six RBI with two outs. As a freshman, Sullivan was named a 2014 NFCA Division I All-America Scholar-Athlete and was chosen for the ACC Academic Honor Roll.
