PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. – Senior tri-captains Luis Haddock (Caguas, P.R./Notre Dame H.S.) and Matthew Scott (Oakton, Va./International School of Paris) and freshman Barry King (Dublin, Ireland/Gonzaga College) each picked up a win on the first day of singles play in the adidas Invitational at the Peachtree City Tennis Center.
King made his college debut in the first round with a victory over Arizona State’s Jon Stott 6-2, 6-1. He later dropped a 7-5, 6-3 decision to Jonathan Stokke of Duke in the second round of play.
“Barry played well. It was a good way to start” said Irish assistant coach Todd Doebler.”He had some opportunities against Stokke but couldn’t capitalize on them.”
Haddock and Scott each earned byes into the second round. 64th-ranked Haddock defeated Wisconsin’s Lachezar Kasarov 6-3, 6-4. Scott turned in a solid performance with a 6-3, 6-1 win against TCU’s Daniel Scholten. The trio will continue in singles and doubles action tomorrow.
