Irish Secure Series with Comeback Win Over Cardinal

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Notre Dame baseball team posted their second consecutive come-from-behind win with a 10-7 victory over Stanford on Saturday afternoon.

DJ Helwig recorded back-to-back strikeouts to force the Cardinal into stranding a runner on second base in the top of the first inning. The Irish struck in the bottom of the first. Drew Berkland drew a walk, and an error saw Mark Quatrani reach first as Berkland moved to third. A grounder by Dylan Passo then drove in Berkland for the 1-0 Irish lead.

The Cardinal posted a three-run second inning and added another run in the top of the third for a 4-1 advantage. Stanford plated a run in the top of the fourth for a 5-1 lead, but the Irish broke through for a two-spot in the bottom of the fourth. Mark Quatrani and Dylan Passo hit back-to-back singles to get things started. Jayce Lee then drove in Quatrani with a single, and Andrew Graham added a single to plate Passo to make it a 5-3 game.

Dylan Singleton retired the Stanford side in order in the top of the fifth and held the Stanford bats at bay in the sixth.

Stanford used a bloop double in the top of the seventh to score a run for a 6-3 lead.

Mason Barth and Jamie Zee drew back-to-back walks to start the bottom of the seventh for the Irish. Brandon Logan used a sacrifice bunt to move the pair into scoring position. Bino Watters drew a full-count, two-out walk, and Mark Quatrani delivered a single to center field to drive in Barth and Zee to make it 6-5.

Oisin Lee forced the Cardinal into stranding two runners on base in the top of the eighth. Jayce Lee started the bottom half of the inning by drawing a full-count walk to get the lead-off man aboard. Andrew Graham laced a single down the left field to put runners on the corners as Noah Coy came in to run for Graham. Coy stole second, and the throw down to try to catch the sophomore was off the mark as Lee came in to score the tying run. Jamie Zee took full advantage of the sun with a triple to right field, driving in Coy on the play. Brandon Logan added a single to center field to drive in Zee as the Irish took an 8-6 lead. Bino Watters drew a walk, and Mark Quatrani drove in Logan and Watters with double to right field to make it 10-6 for the home side.

The Cardinal put a pair of runners on base and plated a run in the top of the ninth before Noah Rooney closed out the win with his second save of the weekend.

Mark Quatrani went 4-for-5 with four RBI, a double and a run to pace the Irish. Andrew Graham was 2-for-4 at the dish with an RBI, and Jamie Zee had a clutch triple with an RBI while scoring two runs. Dylan Passo, Jayce Lee and Brandon Logan each had a hit, scored a run and drove in one. Drew Berkland, Bino Watters, Noah Coy and Mason Barth each scored a run in the win.

DJ Helwig threw a shoutout inning with two strikeouts. Xavier Hirsch went two complete, and Dylan Singleton posted 3.2 innings with four strikeouts. Radek Birkholz went one-third of an inning. Oisin Lee had a shutout inning of work with a strikeout and earned the win. Will Jaisle and Noah Rooney closed out the ninth, and Rooney earned the save by retiring all three batters he faced.

The Irish (23-20, 10-16 ACC) close out the series against Stanford starting at 1:00 p.m. ET on Sunday.
