Irish Set To Open 2003-04 Season At Cougar Classic

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Notre Dame women’s golf team opens play for the 2003-04 season Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 15-16, at the Cougar Classic in Hanahan, S.C. The 54-hole tournament will be played on the par-72, 6,026-yard course at the Yeamans Hall Golf Club and will be hosted by the College of Charleston.

The prestigious tournament features a field of 18 schools. Along with 2003 BIG EAST Conference champion Notre Dame and the College of Charleston, Appalachian State, Campbell, Cincinnati, East Carolina, Furman, Kentucky, Louisville, Maryland, Miami (Fla.), Mississippi, UNC-Greensboro, North Carolina State, Penn State, Richmond, South Florida and Virginia also will participate in the tournament. Teams will play 36 holes on Monday beginning at 8:38 a.m. (EDT), with the final round slated for Tuesday at 8:52 a.m. (EDT).

Third-year Irish head coach Debby King is looking forward to opening the season at the Cougar Classic.

“We are ready to go,” King said. “We feel fortunate to have been invited to a great tournament such as the Cougar Classic. I look forward to playing there and I would like to see us come away with a top-five finish.”

King will look to three returning players and two newcomers to secure a good showing at the tournament. Leading the lineup are senior captain Shannon Byrne (Arlington Heights, Ill.), junior Karen Lotta (Los Angeles, Calif.) and sophomore Katie Brophy (Spokane, Wash.), the 2003 BIG EAST Championship co-medalist. Freshmen Stacy Brown (The Woodlands, Texas) and Noriko Nakazaki (Hanover Park, Ill.) will round out the Notre Dame five in Charleston.

Portions of the Cougar Classic are scheduled to be televised live in the Charleston area and via webcast at cougars.cofc.edu. The tournament will air Monday from 10 a.m.-noon (EDT) and 4-6 p.m. (EDT). There also will be coverage from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. (EDT) during Tuesday’s final round. In addition, live hole-by-hole scoring will be available by Golfstat at www.golfstatlive.com and results will be posted here at www.und.com following play on each day.
