COLUMBUS, Ohio — After Saturday’s first round of the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate on the Scarlet Course at the Ohio State Golf Club (par 71/7,454 yards) in Columbus, Ohio, about the only winner was the weather. Notre Dame and the other 15 teams in the field slogged their way through steady rain and wind during the opening 18 holes before round two was suspended because of inclement conditions, with the remainder of the tournament currently in limbo. The Irish were in 13th place after the first round at 30-over par 314, part of a cluster of eight teams separated by only 11 strokes — Louisville holds the overnight lead at 292 (+8), two shots clear of South Carolina.
Junior Greg Rodgers (Phoenix, Md./St. Paul’s School) and sophomore Josh Sandman (Greensboro, N.C./Southeast Guilford) had the most individual success for the Irish on Saturday, tying for 36th place with matching scores of seven-over par 78. Three Notre Dame golfers — senior All-America candidate Cole Isban (South Bend, Ind./Mishawaka Marian), junior Mike King (Sidney, Ohio/Sidney) and freshman Doug Fortner (Tustin, Calif./Foothill) — all tied for 44th place at nine-over par 79, with King playing as an individual competitor. The remaining Irish scorer was senior co-captain Adam Gifford (Plymouth, Ind./Plymouth), who shot a first-round 81 (+10) and is among a group in 64th place.
Weather permitting, the Kepler Intercollegiate will continue Sunday morning with the resumption of the second round, followed by the third round in its entirety. Final results will be posted on the official Notre Dame athletics web site (www.und.com) upon completion of the day’s action. Fans also can obtain updates on the Irish at the Kepler Intercollegiate through the Notre Dame Sports Hotline (574-631-3000) and the Irish ALERT text message system (click here for more details).
