The No. 26 University of Notre Dame men’s tennis team (12-9) completed a sweep of a double header on Sunday, March 25, 2018, with a 6-1 victory over IUPUI (6-11) at the Eck Tennis Pavilion. The Irish started the day with a 7-0 Atlantic Coast Conference victory over Virginia Tech.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Notre Dame secured the doubles point behind a 6-3 win at No. 2 by William Howells and Tristan McCormick by a score of 6-3. The No. 3 team of Drew Dawson and Nathan Griffin had already secured a quick 6-2 win in their match to begin doubles play.
After falling behind 3-0, the No. 1 team of Richard Ciamarra and Brendon Krempin rallied back to take a 5-4 lead before the No. 2 team victory ended their match.
Matt Gamble started the singles matches off strong for the Irish with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2. He was quickly followed by Paul Gota at No. 6 with a 6-0, 6-2 victory.
Jonathan Small would earn the match victory for the Irish with the fourth point of the afternoon for the home team, taking No. 3 singles 6-1, 6-2.
At No. 1 singles, Guillermo Cabrera won game one 6-0, then rallied for a 7-6 (7-3) victory in game two and provide a 6-0 cushion for the Irish.
The final match ended up as the longest of the day, as No. 4 singles Nathan Griffin ralled from a 4-6 first-set loss to win the second set 7-6 (8-6). IUPUI’s Ethan Mardanus-Budiono ended the match via the third-set tiebreaker 10-6.
NEXT UP FOR THE IRISH
The Irish face a challenging road trip to No. 23 NC State on Friday, March 30 before a Easter Sunday showdown with No. 1 Wake Forest.
