Irish Sweep N.C. State

NOTRE DAME, Ind.  —  Charley Niego collected 12 kills and 11 digs as Notre Dame swept NC State (25-16, 25-17, 25-20) on Friday night in Purcell Pavilion.

Aubrey Hamilton and Sydney Bent added nine kills apiece behind Niego’s match-high 12. Zoe Nunez dished out 32 assists in the three sets.

Nunez also led the Irish with 13 digs while Hattie Monson and Kiara Schmidt each recorded nine. Sammi Lockwoood led all players with six total blocks.

Nancy Kane and Schmidt tied for a match-high three service aces apiece.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Set

Notre Dame came out strong as they dominated their way to a 25-16 set win. The Irish came out with kills from Bent, Miller, Hamilton, and Niego to put them at an 8-3 lead. 

Notre Dame then used a 6-1 run, which included an ace by Monson, to extend their lead to 17-7. The Wolfpack got back within six with a 4-0 run, but the Irish earned the next three points and held on to take the frame, 25-16.

Second Set

The Wolfpack took the lead in the second set with a 5-0 run putting them up 7-3. Later, a 7-0 run would help the Irish retake the lead with a block from Miller and Nunez.

Kills from Niego and Lockwood would propel the Irish through their 7-0 run. Two kills from Bent would continue the lead as the Irish earned a 21-14 advantage. Miller closed the set with a kill to clinch a 25-17 triumph for Notre Dame.

Third Set

Five straight points, including kills from Bent and Hamilton, would immediately put the Irish up 5-0. With a 10-6 advantage, the Irish extended their lead with four straight points to take control at 14-6.

The Irish stayed in front comfortably from that point and cruised to a 25-20 decision to seal the sweep.
