STATESBORO, Ga. – The University of Notre Dame men’s golf team is coming off it’s lowest tournament score of the spring season after finishing the Schenkel Invitational with a score of 859(-5) in Statesboro, Georgia. The team’s fourth place finish was also their second-highest finish of the year and best since the turn of the calendar year.
“It’s been a slow start to the spring, but our team turned a corner this week and although it wasn’t the result we wanted, good things are ahead for our program,” Director of Golf and Head Coach John Handrigan said.
Jacob Modleski paced the Irish with a third place finish over the three-day tournament, finishing with a tournament low 67(-5) in the final round for an overall score of 210(-6). The sophomore opened the tournament shooting 70(-2) in the opening round before posting a 73(+1) score on the middle day.
“It was another exceptional week for Jacob with a great final round of 67, which put himself in position with a chance to win coming down the stretch. Jacob’s daily process and work ethic is elite and he will be back in the winners circle soon,” Handrigan added.
The second Irish finisher was fellow sophomore Rocco Salvitti whose 214(-2) finish placed him 13th overall. Salvitti bookended the weekend with a pair of 73(+1) scores while posting a season-low 68(-4) in round two for the 214(-2) final tally.
“It was very promising to see Rocco with a chance to win on the back nine as well [on the final day]. We will work hard together on better ways to handle that situation, but he’s extremely competitive and I love how his game is trending,” Handrigan concluded.
Nate Stevens finished the weekend at par with a score of 210(E) after three consecutive rounds shooting 72(E).
Christopher Bagnall took fourth for the Irish and 44th overall with a score of 221(+5) over the three-day stretch. The sophomore recorded the team’s only two eagles of the weekend, as he hit an eagle on the seventh hole (par 5) in both the first and second rounds. Bagnall opened the Schenkel Invitational with a 77(+5) score before shooting par the remainder of the tournament for the final score of 221(+5).
Freshman Mike Qiu rounded out the competition in Georgia, finishing with an overall score of 230(+14). He opened the tournament with a score of 75(+3) before following it up with second and third round scores of 76(+4) and 79(+7), respectively.
The Irish will have a weekend hiatus before traveling back to Georgia for the Haskins Award Invitational in Augusta, April 5-6.
