WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Playing in harsh weather that included bitter cold, wind and the occasional snow flurry, the Notre Dame men’s golf team finds itself tied for 11th place after one round at the Boilermaker Invitational, which began Saturday afternoon on the Kampen Course (par 72/7,338 yards) at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex in West Lafayette, Ind. The Irish carded a 28-over par 316, matching Ohio State’s total, and putting Notre Dame among a group of 10 teams from places 3-13 that are separated by just 10 shots. Purdue holds the overnight lead at 12-over par 300, one shot clear of Michigan State in the 15-team event.

Because of the poor weather, the opening round was delayed three hours, and the tournament itself has been shortened to 36 holes. Once the Irish took the course, senior All-America candidate Cole Isban (South Bend, Ind./Mishawaka Marian) showed veteran savvy in the face of the atmospheric adversity, firing a four-over par 76 to tie for 13th place in the 80-man field. Isban is four shots off the individual lead, currently held by Michigan State’s Ryan Brehm, who was the lone golfer to reach par on Saturday with a level mark of 72.

Sophomore Josh Sandman (Greensboro, N.C./Southeast Guilford) is tied for 37th place thus far, shooting a seven-over par 79, with the three remaining Notre Dame golfers one shot behind each other. Senior co-captain Adam Gifford (Plymouth, Ind./Plymouth) is tied for 42nd place at eight-over par 80, with freshman Doug Fortner (Tustin, Calif./Foothill) in a 58th-place draw at nine-over par 81, and junior Greg Rodgers (Phoenix, Md./St. Paul’s School) tied for 62nd place at 10-over par 82.

Notre Dame will be back on course Sunday beginning at 10 a.m. ET for the final round of the Boilermaker Invitational, with teams scheduled to tee off via a shotgun start. Final results will be posted on the official Notre Dame athletics web site (www.und.com) upon completion of the day’s action. Fans also can obtain updates on the Irish at the Boilermaker Invitational through the Notre Dame Sports Hotline (574-631-3000) and the Irish ALERT text message system (click here to register).
