Irish Track & Field Hosts Meyo Invitational

Feb. 3, 2005

Notre Dame, Ind. – The 18th annual Meyo Invitational will take place this weekend at Notre Dame, and if recent history is any indication the meet should feature many great performances. The meet will begin on Friday afternoon at 5:00 p.m. with the women’s long jump. The first track event of the meet will be the women’s 5,000 meters, which will start at 7:00. Action continues on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. with sprint trials and slower sections of the remaining running events. Finals will begin at 2:00 with the Meyo Mile scheduled for 2:30. A complete schedule is available in a previous und.com release: http://www.collegesports.com/auto_pdf/p_hotos/s_chools/nd/sports/c-track/auto_pdf/2005MeyoSchedule.

Many outstanding teams and individuals are expected to participate in the meet. The Meyo Mile, as usual should be a spectacular event. The women’s section of the mile will also be very competitive, highlighted by a pair of Michigan runners, senior Lindsay Gallo and freshman Alyson Kohlmeier. Gallo owns the third best mile time in the NCAA this year and Kohlmeier, the younger sister of Notre Dame’s Amy Kohlmeier, has the fourth fastest mile in the nation.

The men’s 800 meters will also be a very close race. Among the entries in that race, the ten best seed times are faster than the NCAA qualification mark of 1:49.50. The likely favorite in that race will be Nate Brannen, another Michigan Wolverine. Last weekend Brannen just missed the collegiate record in the mile, finishing that race in a blazing time of 3:55.11. Notre Dame freshman Adam Currie is also entered in the race, and after a very solid effort in the same event last week he will be looking to better his time and qualify for the NCAA Championships in that elite field.

Off the track, the women’s high jump could end up being one of the best events on the day. Notre Dame senior Stacey Cowan holds the tenth best high jump in the NCAA this season, but will likely be just the fourth best jumper in Friday’s competition. Leading the high jump field will be the nation’s best high jumper Chaunte Howard of Georgia Tech.

The complete list of invited teams is below, however many other schools will be represented by individual competitors; additionally many “unattached” athletes will compete this weekend.

Invited Teams: Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan State, Ole Miss, Georgia Tech, Wake Forest, Missouri, Arkansas, Butler, Marquette, the Clemson and Alabama men, and the Vanderbilt women.

HEAT SHEETS

Heat sheets listing every competitor in every event will be posted on und.com as soon as they become available.

TRAFFIC CHANGES STILL IN EFFECT

As construction progresses on the new Guglielmino Athletic Complex, parking and access to the Loftus Center will remain the same as it was last season.

All fans will need to park in Notre Dame’s C1 parking lot directly south of the Joyce Center. Be prepared for a long walk to access Loftus Center, which can be found just north of Cartier Field and Moose Krause Stadium. There is no parking available in front of Loftus or behind the Joyce Center for those attending the track and field meet.

As always, admission to Notre Dame track meets is free.
