NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Coming off a successful indoor track and field season along with a historic finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championships in March, the Irish are primed for the upcoming outdoor season. The full outdoor slate was announced on Tuesday morning.
Headlining the schedule is Notre Dame’s first home meet at the Harris Family Track and Field Stadium, which will be the Bob Harris Invite on Saturday, May 1.
The 2021 schedule sees the Irish travel all over the country for meets, as Notre Dame is set to compete in 13 meets across 10 different states.
It has been nearly two years since Notre Dame and the rest of the NCAA track and field world competed in outdoor events, after the 2020 season was canceled due to COVID.
The Irish earned four All-America citations during the indoor season, as Rachel Tanczos (Weight Throw), Jadin O’Brien (Pentathlon) and Sam Voelz (800m) each took home first team honors. Olivia Markezich (3,000m) earned second team status.
The highly ranked men’s distance runners decided to forgo the indoor season to focus on the cross country season, a move that paid off in a big way.
Notre Dame finished as the national runner-up at the NCAA Championships in March, earning six All-American honors, two more than any other program in the country. Danny Kilrea (10th), Dylan Jacobs (20th), Andrew Alexander (21st), Jake Renfree (22nd), Yared Nuguse (23rd) and Josh Methner (36th) each were named All-Americans for finishing in the top 40 of the race.
Nuguse enters the 2021 outdoor season as the defending NCAA champion in the 1,500m race, as his photo finish kick gave him the title in 2019.
On the women’s side, Maddy Denner and Jackie Gaughan also competed at the 2019 NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas, competing in the 10,000m run.
The Irish will get the 2021 outdoor season underway this weekend at the Raleigh Relays from March 25-27 on the campus of NC State.
