PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – For the second consecutive season, the Irish men’s track and field team won the BIG EAST Outdoor Championship, edging Louisville by half a point for the 2009 title.
Notre Dame also clinched its 100th overall BIG EAST title since joining the conference in 1995-96.
Notre Dame claimed the men’s title for the fifth time in seven years, while the Irish coaching staff earned their sixth outdoor BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year award. This marks the seventh consecutive year that the Irish men have won either the indoor or outdoor conference crown.
After being tied for second after the second day of competition, the Irish rallied to edge Louisville 130.50-130. Georgetown finished third with 92 points, Cincinnati was fourth with 84 and Rutgers rounded out the top five with 75.50 points.
The Irish women finished fourth with 85.50 points, as Louisville took top team honors with 138. Connecticut finished second with 102 points, Georgetown was fourth with 91 and Villanova finished fifth with 80 points.
The Irish will compete at the Georgia Tech Invitational May 15-16, before heading to the NCAA Regional May 29-30.
Men’s 100 Meters: Miklos Szebeny finished fourth with a time of 10.73.
Men’s 200 Meters: Miklos Szebeny clocked in at 21.64 to finish fourth.
Men’s 400 Meters: Billy Buzaid finished fifth with a time of 48.48.
Men’s 800 Meters: Jack Howard crossed the line in 1:51.83 to finish fifth.
Men’s 1500 Meters: Daniel Clark earned all-BIG EAST honors with a third-place finish and a time of 3:45.11. Jordan Carlson finished fifth in 3:47.37, Ryan Gamboa was ninth in 3:52.30 and Spencer Carter clocked in at 3:58.26 to finish 13th.
Men’s 5000 Meters: Patrick Smyth clocked in at 14:17.31 to finish third and earn all-league honors. Paul Springer finished seventh in 14:25.47, Jake Walker finished 12th in 14:33.14, Dan Jackson was 15th with a time of 14:36.16 and Ryan Jacobs finished 16th in 14:37.68.
Men’s 400-Meter Hurdles: Balazs Molnar finished fourth with a time of 51.37.
Men’s 4×100-Meter Relay: The Irish men earned all-BIG EAST honors with a third-place time of 41.38.
Men’s 4×400-Meter Relay: The Irish team finished second with a time of 3:11.26 to earn all-league honors.
Men’s 4×800-Meter Relay: Notre Dame finished third in 7:26.65, earning all-BIG EAST nods.
Men’s Pole Vault: Matt Schipper earned all-BIG EAST honors and an individual title with a first-place mark of 5.25m (17-2 3/4). Kevin Schipper finished fourth with a mark of 4.95m (16-2 3/4), while Brian Mahon was ninth at 4.50m (14-9).
Men’s Triple Jump: Eric Quick finished fourth with a jump of 14.87m (48-9 1/2).
Men’s Hammer Throw: Jeff Mensch won an individual title and earned all-conference honors with a first-place toss of 58.79m (192-10). Greg Davis finished sixth at 54.04m (177-03), John Belcher was ninth with a mark of 50.65m (166-02) and Mitchell Gormley finished 15th at 48.21m (158-02).
Women’s 400 Meters: Joanna Schultz won an individual title and all-BIG EAST honors with a first-place time of 53.12.
Women’s 800 Meters: Kelly Langhans finished eighth with a time of 2:12.09.
Women’s 1500 Meters: Marissa Treece finished ninth with a time of 4:31.76.
Women’s 5000 Meters: Heidi Rocha clocked in at 16:58.21 to finish ninth, while Theresa Cattuna finished 18th in 18:06.32.
Women’s 100-Meter Hurdles: Kali Watkins finished seventh in 14.16.
Women’s 400-Meter Hurdles: Joanna Schultz finished sixth with a time of 1:02.35.
Women’s 4×400-Meter Relay: The Irish women finished seventh with a time of 3:47.49.
Women’s 4×800-Meter Relay: The Irish finished fourth in 8:56.43.
Women’s High Jump: Maddie Buttinger finished eighth with a mark of 1.60m (5-3).
Women’s Triple Jump: Jaime Minor finished seventh with a jump of 11.66m (38-3 1/4).
Women’s Hammer Throw: Anna Weber earned all-conference honors with a third-place toss of 57.94m (190-01).
