SHOAL CREEK, Ala. — After two rounds of play on Monday, the Notre Dame men’s golf team has put itself within striking distance of the Shoal Creek Tournament title. The Fighting Irish sit in second place at five-under par (571), four strokes back from leader Wake Forest (567, -9).
Speaking of title contention, sophomore Hunter Ostrom is tied for fifth place on the leaderboard after firing off a 141 (-3) on Monday, six strokes behind UAB’s William Walker, III.
Round One
Ostrom highlighted round one play with a 69 (-3), marking the second-best outing of his young career. The sophomore was one of three competitors to record an eagle on the day, achieving the feat on the par-5 11th.
As a team, the Irish got off to a somewhat slow start on the back-nine, sitting at two-over par through the first five holes. Yet, Notre Dame settled in to post a 285 (-3) on the round, which put them in a tie for second place.
Adding to the team score for the round were both Ben Albin and Davis Chatfield, who each shot a 71 (-1).
Round Two
Round two action was highlighted by junior Miguel Delgado, who birdied three of the last five holes to produce a 69 (-3) of his own. As a result, Delgado jumped nearly 20 spots in the standings to a tie for 12th place at one-under par (143).
Ostrom maintained his steady play by reeling off 16 pars to finish even (72) for the round. In addition, Kevin Conners shot a 33 (-3) on the front-nine to stay under-par (71, -1) for round two.
Ultimately, Notre Dame shot a 286 (-2) in the second round, one stroke shy of its earlier afternoon tally.
