NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The 24th-ranked Irish women’s cross country team finished 10th, while the 28th-ranked men finished 16th at the Notre Dame Invitational Friday at the Notre Dame Golf Course.
Senior Lindsey Ferguson was the top Irish finisher, crossing the line in 15th with a time of 17:08. Junior Marissa Treece finished 59th in 17:38, followed by sophomore Rachel Velarde in 66th with a time of 17:41. Junior Erica Watson clocked in at 17:45 to finish 72nd, senior Beth Tacl finished 76th in 17:48 and junior Theresa Cattuna was 79th with a time of 17:51. Freshman Rebecca Tracy finished 85th in 17:57.
The Notre Dame women earned 288 points for their 10th-place Blue Division finish. No. 1 Washington took the women’s team crown with 33 points after the Huskies took the top four individual finishes. No. 6 Princeton finished second with 68 points, followed by the 15th-ranked Florida Gators in third with 104 points. No. 22 Penn State and No. 13 Arizona State round out the top five.
Washington’s Kendra Schaaf was the individual women’s winner with a time of 16:31.
The Irish men notched 384 points in their 16th-place finish in the Blue Division race. Junior Dan Jackson was the first Irish runner to cross the line, finishing 45th with a time of 24:37. Senior Jake Walker finished 67th in 24:57, while sophomore Joe Miller clocked in at 25:04 to finish 78th. Junior Ryan Jacobs finished 94th with a time of 25:16, sophomore Johnathan Shawel was 100th in 25:22 and junior Paul Springer finished 110th with a time of 25:31. Freshman J.P. Malette finished 128th in 25:49.
Washington swept the team titles after taking the men’s crown with 113 points. No. 15 Providence finished second with 119 points, while 24th-ranked New Mexico was third with 151 points. No. 20 Butler and Arizona State round out the top five.
New Mexico’s Jacob Kirwa won the individual men’s title with a time of 23:44.
In the earlier races, North Central College won the men’s Gold Division race with 46 points, followed by Grand Valley State in second with 52 and Eastern Michigan in third with 93 points. DePaul’s Matt Graham won the individual crown with a time of 24:34.
Grand Valley State won the women’s Gold Division crown with 48 points, followed by Dayton with 104 points in second and Calvin College in third with 119 points. Ayla Mitchell, of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, won the women’s individual Gold title with a time of 17:31.
The Irish will take two weeks off before competing at the Pre-National NCAA Meet on Oct. 17 in Terre Haute, Ind.
