CULVER, Indiana — The No. 11 Notre Dame football team held its third practice of 2018 on another hot, steamy day at Culver Academies on Sunday, August 5.
Temperatures were in the 90s, with a heat index nearing 100 degrees and the only relief coming in the form of a 12-18 MPH breeze. As the Irish continued through the NCAA-mandated acclimatization period, they practiced in shells for the first time after two days with no pads. After another day in shells on Monday, Notre Dame can go full pads on Tuesday.
The players and coaches have begun to settle into the routine of camp, with the timing of the day’s meals, practice and meetings mirroring the first two days. The heat has placed an added emphasis on recovery and hydration.
On the practice field, the Irish had the opportunity to shine in several competitive situations. Notre Dame had three periods of 11-on-11 as well as multiple periods of both 1-on-1 and 7-on-7. Fighting Irish Media’s Jack Nolan caught up with Dick Corbett Head Football Coach Brian Kelly to get the coach’s thoughts on the session. Nolan also chatted with senior wide receiver Miles Boykin on the progress of the wideouts thus far.
After meetings, dinner and Sunday mass for the team, the Irish are back at it with practice number four at Oliver Field on Monday morning.
Culver Cuts
- Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly has started a new tradition during fall camp. He’ll pick an offensive, defensive and special teams player of the day. The player selected will have best represented the traits necessary to compete for championships. Stay tuned to @CoachBrianKelly on Twitter to see the winners from practice three.
- Practice number two saw Tommy Kraemer (offense), Drue Tranquill (defense) and Nicco Fertita (special teams) collect the nod.
- Saturday’s news included an announcement from ESPN that the popular College GameDay show will air live from the Notre Dame campus on Saturday, Sept. 1, in advance of the season-opener with Michigan. @NDFootball had some fun with the announcement and you can check out the video here.

He also gave a pep talk to Peck’s team prior to the Eagles’ game against St. John’s Military Academy, which was played at Soldier Field on Nov. 8, 1930. Rockne (ND) and Peck (Pitt) are in the College Football Hall of Fame.
