SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Nicolas Jacobsen and Baylee Mires have joined the Irish track and field and cross country programs as the assistant men’s and women’s distance coaches, Irish Hatherly-Piane Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Matt Sparks and Head Men’s Cross Country Coach Sean Carlson announced Monday (Sept. 13).
“Baylee will bring a great blend of elite athletic experience and passion for helping young people,” Sparks said. “She was raised in a successful coaching family and understands the daily grind required to be a successful coach.”
“I’m very excited about coach Jacobsen helping with our men’s distance runners,” Carlson said. “I know he will be a great addition to help keep our system efficient and effective in our goal of having sustainable success as one of the best programs in the NCAA. He is smart, bought in and a team guy and that’s exactly what we want.”
ABOUT JACOBSEN
Jacobsen joins the Irish as the assistant men’s distance coach after serving as the cross country and track and field coach for Saint Andrew’s School in Boca Raton, Florida in 2020-21.
Jacobsen graduated from New York University in 2020, where he ran cross country as a senior and was named to the University Athletic Association’s All-Academic Team in both the fall and spring semesters.
Jacobsen graduated from NYU with a degree specialized in psychology, social sciences and leadership in sport while being named a University Honors Scholar.
ABOUT MIRES
Mires joins the Irish as the assistant women’s distance coach after running professionally for the Brooks Beast Track Club and Under Armour and serving as an assistant cross country and track coach for Bishop Blanchet High School in the Greater Seattle area.
Mires competed collegiately for the University of Washington from 2012-2016, earning First Team All-American honors in the 800M as a senior and in DMR as both a junior and senior. She also earned Second Team All-American accolades in the 800M as a junior. Mires was also a part of the National Championship-winning DMR team as a freshman in 2012 as the first group of UW women to win an indoor championship.
The Spokane, Washington, native competed in the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials, where she ran a PR of 2:02.57 and finished 13th overall.
