NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Senior Josh Sandman (Greensboro, N.C./Southeast Guilford) has been named the BIG EAST Golfer of the Month it was announced by the Conference on Friday afternoon. Sandman announced his return to the Irish lineup – after missing all of last season while recovering from injury – by recording a 71.00 stroke average in his first three tournaments of the 2009-10 season.
Sandman capped his return by winning the 2009 Fighting Irish Gridiron Golf Classic on October 6 for his first career win. He totaled a two-over par 212 (70-68-74) for the tournament to earn the individual win and help the Irish claim the team title as well. He birdied the 14th and 17th and made an important par putt on 18 to become Notre Dame’s first medalist since Max Scodro (Chicago, Ill./Notre Dame Prep. (AZ)) claimed the Palmas Del Mar last season.
Of Sandman’s eight rounds this season, he has notched five rounds at even-par or better. At the Gopher Invitational at the Springhill Golf Club on Sept. 13-14, Sandman posted a career-best 66 in the second round, which included an eagle on the par-5 15th hole. Sandman also carded a 2-under 140 for a 16th place finish at the Mason Rudolph Championship. Sandman also finished tied for 16th at the rain-shortened Mason Rudolph Intercollegiate (71-69-140).
Sandman and the Irish return to action this weekend when they tee it up at The Prestige at PGA WEST from Sunday-Tuesday (Oct. 11-13). The tournament, taking place from the Stadium Course at PGA WEST in La Quinta, Calif., will feature a talented 14-team field competing for the title.
