Kho Makes History Competing in 2023 Open Championship

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Taichi Kho is off to a strong start in his professional golf career after graduating from Notre Dame in 2022 as he competed in the 2023 Open Championship in July, becoming the first alum to compete in a major in program history.

“Competing in a Major Championship is the pinnacle of Professional Golf and to achieve this great accomplishment in your rookie season is truly impressive,” said Notre Dame Director of Golf and Head Men’s Golf Coach John Handrigan. “I couldn’t be more proud of Taichi, who earned this awesome opportunity through years of hard work, dedication, and perseverance.”

Kho was able to clinch a spot in The 151st Open Championship after winning the World City Championship hosted at the Hong Kong Golf Club in March. Kho represented his home in a historic fashion as he became the first player from Hong Kong to win on the Asian Tour. The champion shot a 64-64-70, finishing two strokes ahead of the next competitor.

“All the success that our players are having at the professional level validates the high quality of our program,” continued Handrigan. “Davis Lamb has won twice on the PGA Tour Canada in back to back weeks, Davis Chatfield is having a very successful rookie season on the PGA Tour K.F. with a great chance to earn a PGA Tour Card and now we have Taichi Kho playing in the British Open. These results show that Notre Dame Golf produces elite players.”
