LONDON – Notre Dame freshman fencer Lee Kiefer concluded her first career Olympic appearance Thursday as a member of the sixth-place United States squad in the Women’s Team Foil at the 2012 Olympic Games.
Kiefer (Lexington, Ky./Dunbar), the top ranked American foilist entering the games, compiled a bout record of 36-35 in three U.S. matches during the Women’s Team Foil competition.
Kiefer shut out Japan’s Chieko Sugawara 5-0 (bout one) and Kanae Ikehata 6-0 (bout nine) to help lead the U.S. to a 44-22 victory in a Women’s 5-8 Classification match. She triumphed over Karolina Chlewinska 7-2 in her final bout of the tournament, a 45-39 loss against Poland in the Women’s 5-6 Placement match.
Kiefer won a pair of bouts July 28 to take sixth place individually in the Women’s Individual Foil in her Olympic debut. She defeated Canada’s Monica Peterson 15-10 and Korea’s Jung Gil Ok 15-13 to reach the quarterfinal round. Eventual silver medalist Arianna Errigo of Italy eliminated Kiefer 15-10 in her quarterfinal match.
