Louisville Wins BIG EAST Championship Over Notre Dame In Playoff

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville topped Notre Dame on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff after the third and final round of the 2007 BIG EAST Women’s Golf Championship at the par 72, 6,067-yard Oxmoor Country Club on Tuesday. Both teams finished with identical 54-hole scores of 891 (+27). Annie Brophy, Noriko Nakazaki, Julie Kim and Lisa Maunu all earned all-conference recognition for their performances over the course of the three-day tournament.

Louisville entered the day three shots in back of the Irish, yet made up all three shots by the turn. The back nine went back and forth until the final hole. Maunu, a sophomore, posted a birdie on the par-four 18th to keep in Irish in the hunt. After both teams finished the final hole, the scores were added up and the golfers headed to the par-four ninth hole for the playoff. The Irish posted a one-over par total on the hole, while the Cardinals were even to win their second straight conference title.

Cindy LaCrosse from Louisville won medalist honors as she carded a three-round total of 213 (-3). Her teammate Adrienne White, the defending BIG EAST champion, was the runner-up with a 215. LaCrosse and White both shot the day’s best round with a two-under par 70, which was tied for the tournament’s low score.

Brophy (Spokane, Wash./Gonzaga Prep), a freshman, placed third for the Irish as she carded a season-best three-round score of 216 (72-73-71), including a season-best round of 71 on Tuesday. Nakazaki (Hanover Park, Ill./Hoffman Estates), a senior co-captain, placed fifth with a three-over par 219 (73-74-72) to earn her fourth straight all-conference accolade. .

Kim (Bayside, N.Y./Bayside) was seventh with a 228 (72-78-78) and Maunu tied for 10th after shooting a 230 (77-77-76). Freshman Kristin Wetzel (Middletown, N.Y./Hilton Head Prep) rounded out the Notre Dame lineup with a 235 (75-82-78), which placed her 15th among the field of 34. Notre Dame’s 891 total was a season-best 54-hole score.
