NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Notre Dame senior midfielder Lucius Polk (Washington, D.C./St. Albans) has been named the Great Western Lacrosse League (GWLL) Player of the Week for April 23-29. Polk matched a career-high total with four goals in a 12-6 win over No. 20 Ohio State on Saturday. The win clinched the GWLL title for the Irish and earned them the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Polk has had a breakout season with career-high totals in points (26), goals (17) and assists (9). The senior is part of a high-powered Irish offense that ranks fifth among all NCAA Division I teams by averaging 11.62 goals per game.
This marks the first-ever GWLL Player of the Week honor for Polk. He is the third Fighting Irish player to be tabbed as the league’s Player of the Week this season. Junior goaltender Joey Kemp (Potomac, Md./Georgetown Prep) was named the GWLL’s top player twice, for the week of Feb. 12-18 and the week of March 19-25. Senior midfielder Brian Hubschmann (Short Hills, N.J./Delbarton) earned the honor for the week of March 12-18.
Notre Dame joins Ohio State with four GWLL Player of the Week honors this season. No other team in the league has more than one selection.
The ninth-ranked Fighting Irish have won seven straight games and will carry a 10-3 record into their regular-season finale at Quinnipiac on Saturday.
