Margaret Smith Named All-ACC

April 23, 2014

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Senior captain Margaret Smith of the Notre Dame women’s lacrosse team has been honored as the program’s first All-ACC selection as she was named to the second-team on defense Wednesday afternoon in a vote of the conference’s coaches.

Smith was a first-team All-BIG EAST pick in both 2012 and 2013. In March, she was named to the 2014 midseason All-America second team and is on the watch list for the Tewaaraton Award.

Smith moved back into a defensive role this spring and has been one of the country’s top stoppers. Smith leads the ACC in both caused turnovers and ground balls, ranking eighth and seventh nationally in those categories, respectively. The lone regular senior starter and a team captain, Smith has led the Irish both on and off the field in 2014. Smith ranks second in school history with 114 career caused turnovers, third with 141 draw controls and fourth with 156 ground balls. The 156 career ground balls also rank as the third-most amongst all active players nationally.

The No. 13 Fighting Irish begin postseason play on Thursday afternoon when they face No. 1 Syracuse in the ACC quarterfinals at Boston College’s Alumni Stadium. The game is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
