Markus Burton Named Indiana Mr. Basketball

3rd Irish player to earn state's top honor

SOUTH BEND, IN For the third time in program history, an Indiana Mr. Basketball winner will be coming to Notre Dame. Markus Burton, a 6-1 guard from Penn High School (located nearby in Mishawaka), won by a considerable margin on Wednesday night to take home the state’s top honor for a boys’ basketball senior.

The other two Notre Dame/Indiana Mr. Basketballs were Chris Thomas in 2001 and Luke Zeller in 2005. Burton is also the third Mr. Basketball winner from St. Joseph County, following in the footsteps of John Coalmon in 1957 and David Magley in 1978.

“It means a lot to me that I was voted the best basketball player in Indiana,” Burton said. “Thankful for everyone that voted for me and I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity ahead.

Burton averaged a state-best 30.3 points per game, along with 5.7 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 3.6 steals, while shooting 58.2 percent from the floor and 42.5 percent from deep. Burton also secured the school single season scoring record by pouring in 909 points as a senior.

Burton ultimately led Penn to a 28-2 record and Semi-State Runner-Up finish in the 2022-23 season. Overall, Burton went 74-31 over four seasons.

And how about these numbers – for his high school career, Burton totaled both a school and St. Joseph county record 2,273 points. He also accumulated 533 rebounds, 512 assists and 329 steals.

Burton will now have the honor of wearing the No. 1 jersey for the Indiana Boys All-Stars in the annual series against Kentucky. The All-Stars home-and-home series will take place on June 9 in Owensboro, Kentucky and June 10 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
