2013 Men’s Lacrosse Senior CLASS Award Candidates

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – University of Notre Dame defenseman Matt Miller (Warrenton, Va./Notre Dame Academy) has been named one of 20 candidates for the 2013 Senior CLASS Award in the men’s lacrosse division.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

The candidate class will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one finalist who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition. The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2013 NCAA Lacrosse Championships in Philadelphia May 25-27.

Miller has started every contest over the past two seasons on Notre Dame’s stellar defensive unit. He earned honorable mention All-America honors last season in addition to being named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team.

Last season, the Fighting Irish ranked first nationally in scoring defensive as they surrendered just 6.31 goals per game. Notre Dame also had the country’s top man-down defense (.892). Miller picked up 30 ground balls during the season. The Rochester Rattlers selected Miller in the sixth round (44th overall) of January’s Major League Lacrosse Draft.

Miller, a Fighting Irish team captain, boasts a 3.158 cumulative GPA as a finance major in Notre Dame’s nationally-ranked Mendoza College of Business and he is a three-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star. He and the rest of his teammates are heavily involved in service projects in the Notre Dame/South Bend community. Miller also takes part in community service work back home in Virginia.

Notre Dame opened its 2013 campaign Saturday with a 13-5 win at No. 4 Duke. Miller and the Fighting Irish defense held the Blue Devils scoreless for the first 29:31 of the game. He picked up two ground balls in the contest.
