HANAHAN, S.C. – Junior Lisa Maunu (St. Thomas, Ontario/Parkside Collegiate Institute) carded a school-record round of 66 (-6) during the first round of the Cougar Classic on Sunday at the par 72, 6,159-yard Yeamans Hall Golf Club. She holds a two-shot lead heading into Monday’s second round. Notre Dame currently resides in third place after shooting a one-under par 287 on the day. That team total was two shots off the program record for a single round of play.
Alabama and LSU are tied for first after both squads posted two-under par 286 totals. The Irish enter the second round just one shot off the lead, while Texas and Tennessee round out the top five of the 20-team field with identical scores of 288.
Maunu’s total eclipsed the old school mark of 68 held by Karen Lotta. Lotta posted that score during the 2004-05 season. College of Charleston’s Fiona Puyo and Florida State’s Whitney Wright both posted 68 totals on Sunday and are tied for second place out of the 102-golfer field.
Freshman So-Hyun Park (Seoul, South Korea/Bradenton Prep (FL)) is just four shots off the pace of her teammate. The Irish rookie carded a two-under par 70 during her first collegiate round and is currently in a five-way tie for seventh place. Notre Dame sophomore Annie Brophy (Spokane, Wash./Gonzaga Prep) carded a three-over par 75 and resides in a tie for 48th.
Rounding out the Fighting Irish lineup is sophomore Kristin Wetzel (Middletown, N.Y./Hilton Head Prep) and freshman Katie Conway (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River). Wetzel recorded a four-over par 76 and is tied for 54th, while Conway opened her college career with a 78 (+6) and is in a tie for 73rd.
